South Carolina Book Awards

February 13, 2012:  The Book Award Committees are finalizing the materials to use in book award voting.  The ballots you may download will be available sometime tomorrow.  But the four links links to the Survey Monkey tool used to tally votes are ready for use!  If you have created your own system or ballot for your school-level voting, and are ready to submit your votes, you may use the links below.

General reminders:

  • Vote collection data ENDS midnight, March 1, 2012
  • Schools conduct their own election, tally their results, and submit via the links below their vote totals.
  • Schools may participate in any level that is applicable to their grade distribution (i.e. it is possible for a school that has grades k-8 in one building to participate in all four levels.)
  • The general rule of thumb is as follows, and you may have overlapping in some cases:
    • Picture Book Category – Primary Grades
    • Children’s Book Category – Elementary Grades
    • Junior Book Category – Middle or Junior High Grades
    • Young Adult – High School Grades
  • For a student’s vote to count, they must have read minimum three of the nominees.

South Carolina Book Awards History

The South Carolina book award program began in 1976 with the participation of sixteen schools. At the present time, there are approximately three hundred schools and more than 30,000 students participating in this program.

The original book award program was a children’s division for students in grades 3-6. Additional levels were gradually added, and with the inclusion of the Picture Book category in 2003, all students in grades k-12 can now participate.

Since the inception of the South Carolina Book Award program, SCASL members have provided leadership and volunteered many hours of service to make the program a success. Some highlights of the Book Award program are:

1976 – Children’s division begun – Edna Bedenbaugh, Chair
1980 – Young Adult division added – Sue Harden, Chair
1980 – First Executive Board Representative elected – Alleene Holland
1980 – Banners Program added – Debbie Stone and Alleene Holland, Co-chairs
1993 – Junior division added – Jan Sarratt, Chair
2003 – Picture Book division added – Joyce Moore, Chair
